Greater Egleston Community High School

With fiscal and organizational backing from Ecumenical Social Action Committee (ESAC) and support from Urban Edge and Dimock Community Health Center, the Egleston Square Coalition launched a campaign to open an alternative community high school whose mission was to decrease the drop-out rate, improve the educational achievement of students, decrease gang activity and empower the community.  After successfully competing for a federal demonstration grant from the U.S. Department of Labor, the Greater Egleston Community High School opened in 1992 on the first floor of 3134 Washington Street.  In 1996, the Greater Egleston Community High School became one of the first pilot schools of the Boston Public School system.  With an enrollment of approximately 100 students, the High School’s non-traditional curriculum encourages active participation via hands-on learning and interdisciplinary projects, while emphasizing creative and critical thinking skills in all areas.  Ranging from ages 16-22, students of the High School are typically 60% Female and 40% Male; 30% are parents.
