As I end my internship at Urban Edge, I realize how grateful I am for the time I was able to spend with this organization. I moved to Boston on September 1st and joined the Community Engagement team as an MSW intern one week later, with little knowledge about Boston or its surrounding neighborhoods. I quickly learned about the history of Egleston Square and Jackson Square, neighborhoods full of activism and strength. Through attending different community meetings, it was amazing to see the work local leaders are doing to establish a strong network of resources.

Being at Urban Edge has shown me that a housing organization can have a stronger impact than just developing housing. Through community events such as the annual Turkey Drive to providing free tax preparation, Urban Edge supports its residents in many different areas. Part of my role included working with residents to assess the impact of housing on one’s physical health, an initiative that aims to measure how access to affordable, stable housing affects different spheres of one’s life. I feel grateful to have interned at an organization that always strives to evaluate how it can best support the community.

As I continue my career in social work, I will use the lessons I have learned at Urban Edge about community engagement and taking a holistic approach to community development. In my year at Urban Edge, I have met many leaders among residents, community members, and fellow Urban Edge staff members who are so passionate about the community work they do. I am sad to say goodbye, but I know the great work will continue!
