Urban Edge is proud to announce that we had a successful ribbon-cutting ceremony for our Walker Park Apartments on Monday, September 16.
Walker Park Apartments are located in the Egleston Square neighborhood of Roxbury. Residents will have access to nearby parks, shopping, public transportation and the Egleston Square Library. The development is named for longtime community activist Delphine Walker, whose home once stood on one of the three sites.
The new pocket park Delphine’s Courtyard is named after her. Delphine’s Courtyard, the pocket park built with Walker Park Apartments and located on Columbus Ave, improves the streetscape and provides an open space for the community to assemble, read, and play games. The park connects the space to the library next door, and it was designed and built in collaboration with the Friends of the Egleston Square Library. The City of Boston awarded Urban Edge Housing Corporation a grant of $200,000 in Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds towards the pocket park’s construction. As with Walker Park Apartments, the courtyard’s name honors the long-time Egleston activist Delphine Walker, whose family home once stood at 80 Walnut Park.
All of the 49 new apartments have rented to households who earn at or below 60 percent of the area median income (AMI), including eleven apartments reserved for families earning 30 percent of AMI or below. Almost 50 percent of the subcontractors committed to working on the project are minority-owned businesses and more than 22 percent of the committed subcontractors are women-owned.
