Urban Edge Receives $27,000 Brownfields Redevelopment Grant from MassDevelopment for Holtzer Park Development
Boston, Mass. (January 28, 2020) – Urban Edge Housing Corporation announced that it has received a $27,000 award from the Brownfields Redevelopment Fund, which is overseen by MassDevelopment. The award will be used for environmental site assessment at the Holtzer Park development in the Jamaica Plain neighborhood of Boston.
“Thank you to the Baker-Polito Administration and MassDevelopment for this award, which is an important step in the process of building new affordable units in the neighborhood,” said Emilio Dorcely, Urban Edge’s Chief Executive Officer. “The assessment will help us continue to address any challenges associated with this site, which was once a manufacturing facility, and ensure that more families have access to much-needed housing in Boston.”
Holtzer Park is a part of the redevelopment plan at 125 Amory Street in Jackson Square. In November 2015, the Boston Housing Authority designated Urban Edge, The Community Builders (TCB), and Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC) as the developers of the 6-acre 125 Amory Street site. Holtzer Park is one of the new buildings proposed for the site and will bring 62 new affordable rental homes to the neighborhood. The project is named for the Holtzer-Cabot Electric Company, which manufactured electric motors and other parts on the site in the 20th century. The total cost of the project is estimated to be $28 million. The project has also received public funding support from the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development and the City of Boston.
