Families and individuals with housing and/or financial challenges need help building life skills, developing resilience, and finding long-term, appropriate housing. Here are just a few ways you can help:
Free Tax Preparation Center: The first quarter of every year, The VITA Center provides tax assistance and online filing of Federal and State returns for individuals and families. Clients are assisted with filing for all credits for which they qualify, including the Earned Income Tax Credit, Education Tax Credits, Child Tax Credits and Credits for the Elderly.
Annual Toy Drive: Every year, Urban Edge distributes over 750 toys to children in UE housing. Most of those toys are donated by those who attend our annual toy drive.
Turkey Tuesday: On the Tuesday before every Thanksgiving, Urban Edge staff and volunteers gather to pass out between 300 and 600 turkeys and chickens and Thanksgiving fixings.
Welcome Summer: This resource fair connects students with summer camps, job opportunities, free lunches and other events that can help make summer a happy, productive time.
Back to School: Children need supplies for school: notebooks, pencils, backpacks and book bags, even winter coats. Urban Edge takes donations to purchase these supplies, or collects the supplies from generous local businesses.
First-time Homebuyers: First-Time Homebuyer Education Training helps first-time homebuyers gain a thorough understanding of the home purchasing process.
Cleanup Days at the Property: Urban Edge residents are proud of their homes, and work to clean up and spruce up common areas. We welcome anyone who cares to join us in this positive effort.
Neighborhood/block events: Particularly in the warm-weather months, we schedule community-building events that might be anything from a cookout to a neighborhood walk. Volunteers are welcome to join us, pitch in, and get to know your community.
Other Ways You Can Help: You tell us! We’re always looking for special skills, whether that means tax preparation, family financial management, organizational or computer skills, food preparation/presentation, yard work, carpentry, plumbing, etc. Let us know about your special strengths. If you’d like to help, we’ll find a way to fit you in.
